Hardox® pipes

Abrasion-resistant steel pipes with excellent technical and operational characteristics and a long service life.

Being as hard and having the same impact strength as hard-wearing Hardox® sheet steel, our pipes are perfect for applications where lightweight equipment with high resistance to abrasive wear. Long-lasting and wear-resistant pipes with a hardness of 400 or 500 Brinell units can replace expensive welded pipes and high-chromium castings. In addition, when used in difficult operating conditions (for example, transportation of caustic and abrasive sludge), they outperform mild steel pipes in terms of performance and service life.

Light and strong steel pipes ensure a long service life of the system in difficult operating conditions.

Do you want to increase the service life of the equipment by 2, 5, 10 or more times? Need abrasion-resistant steel pipe for handling materials such as wet concrete, slurry, soil, gravel, sand and wet coal dust? Perhaps you need pipe elements for the construction of buckets or other equipment? If so, pipes made of Hardox® 400 or Hardox® 500 steel can be an excellent solution.

Steel pipes and resistance to intensive wear

The moving abrasive slurry can have a destructive effect on the inner wall of the steel pipe. This can cause serious problems for equipment, particularly pipelines used to transport sludge that contains ore or beneficiation tailings. Such abrasive and erosive wear can lead to significant financial losses associated with downtime and expensive repairs.

In addition, the failure of a steel pipeline is usually difficult to predict. That is why it is important, as much as possible, to reduce wear and tear, reduce the amount of maintenance and increase the life of the pipeline.

How abrasive wear of pipes occurs, and why pipes made of high-strength material resistant to abrasive wear outperform products made of mild steel in an abrasive environment.

In pipelines used for transportation, abrasive wear occurs when abrasive slurry or solid particles slide along or push against the pipe walls. This effect on the pipe walls can cause material loss, and in the worst case – leakage or system failure.

Mild steel is not able to withstand the impact of an abrasive environment for more than one or two years. Despite the sufficient strength and impact toughness, mild steel, unlike strong steel, does not provide the necessary resistance to abrasive wear under difficult operating conditions.

What about cast wear-resistant pipes? Pipes with extremely hard walls throughout the thickness are usually brittle. Due to peak pressure, the pipeline of transportation systems is in constant motion. A system of brittle cast pipes, which are often used in abrasive environments, is not the best choice.

Abrasion resistant Hardox® high strength steel tubes are an easy to operate and serviceable solution when wear resistant components in the form of tubes are required for abrasive environments and severe service conditions. At the same time, less steel can be used to ensure the required strength.

Remu sorting buckets are designed for the most difficult tasks. Abrasion-resistant Hardox® steel pipes are the main element in ensuring a long service life.

Hardox® tubes last longer and reduce the weight of Remu screening buckets

Hardox® pipes play an important role in the design of Finnish company Remu’s screening buckets. Screening is carried out by blade rotors made of wear-resistant Hardox 500 sheet steel, welded to Hardox 500 Tube steel. Rotors separate a large fraction or grind heterogeneous material, which is associated with increased wear of blades and pipes.

Previously, the Remu company used S355 steel pipes with reinforcement. This decision was by no means optimal. It required a long production process, and the service life did not reach the desired level. By switching to Hardox® 500 Tube steel, Remu was able to reduce the thickness of the tubes to reduce the weight of the equipment. An additional advantage was the increase in service life.

Advantages of Hardox® pipes

  • On average last 5 times longer than mild steel pipes.
  • Able to increase the service life of equipment, reduce maintenance costs and the number of unplanned stops.
  • High strength design with low weight
  • Available products of various diameters
  • Standard or special size pipes
  • Simple on-site installation and repair
  • Flexibility in design and production
  • An excellent alternative to difficult welding, resistant to cast wear pipes
  • The pipes have sufficient strength and shock resistance to be used as a support in the construction of heavy equipment!

Typical areas of application include:

  • Concrete pump piping in the concrete mixer system
  • Pipeline for transporting sludge
  • Industrial pipeline of other purpose (for moving ash, soil, gravel)
  • Pressure pulpogen and soil excavation equipment
  • Fixed rigid pipeline for dust collection
  • Agricultural systems for transportation and processing of corn, cereals and other products
  • Design elements of buckets and attachment tools of heavy equipment
  • Fields where high strength, minimum tolerances and high-quality finishing are required

Pressure resistance

Hardox® round pipes are thoroughly pressure tested. When tested, Hardox® 400 steel pipe of all sizes must withstand a peak pressure of 60 MPa (8700 psi) for at least six hours. When testing Hardox® 500 steel pipe, a peak pressure of 85 MPa (12,330 psi) is applied.

Consistently guaranteed quality for predictable machining behavior

Before hardening, Hardox® wear-resistant pipes are subjected to roller profiling and plasma-arc welding. This guarantees the constancy of the mechanical properties of the weld and the base material, which increases the durability of steel pipes.

Thanks to a homogeneous chemical composition and a high level of purity, these abrasion-resistant pipes are characterized by exceptional constancy of characteristics, due to which high precision and efficiency can be achieved in the workshop. Despite the high strength, Hardox® pipes can be welded, cut, milled and drilled in conventional ways.

Hardox® 400 and 500 pipes meet the requirements of the EN 10210 standard for tests and dimensional tolerances.
