Aldur®

aldur® steels are water-hardened, high-strength, fine-grained steels with a minimum yield strength of 500 to 960 MPa and excellent low-temperature strength .

aldur® Chords

Using a specially developed manufacturing process, we manufacture high-strength hot-formed components for self-elevating installations.

Offshore platforms stand on adjustable supports. During transportation, the supports retract and protrude upwards. On an offshore platform, they support the platform and anchor it to the seabed. Chords manufactured by voestalpine Grobblech strengthen the toothed rails of these supports and thus ensure safe operation in adverse conditions.

Complicated manufacturing process

We have developed our technology for producing chords as hot-formed components in our own press shop. The starting material is a heavy sheet of high-strength fine-grained structural steel manufactured in our own rolling shop. Strips are cut from this slab and formed using a special tool on a hydraulic press with a maximum pressing force of up to 3,500 tons. The function of the tool is based on finite element calculations and guarantees a high level of shape accuracy. After hot forming, the chords are hardened with water and straightened. The edging, cut with a torch or milled on the long and short sides, is the final stage of the production process.

Plates of high strength

High stress

Cars and buildings keep getting bigger. When the size of a component is doubled in length, width, and height, the weight increases by a factor of 8, while the load-bearing cross-sectional surface area only increases by a factor of 4. This increases the stress, or weight in relation to the cross-sectional surface area, by a factor of two. High-strength steels can absorb these high loads, even if the weight of the component is reduced.

Specific benefits

The lower weight of high-strength and ultra-high-strength heavy sheets saves money: the amount of input material, transportation costs, installation and foundation costs are significantly reduced. Costs are also saved during post-processing. Thanks to good weldability, work can be done faster and more efficiently. Significantly less welding consumables are required and weld inspection is made easier.

Our program

High-strength heavy plates are available as fine-grained steel with a minimum yield strength of 620 and 700 MPa. Extra high strength heavy plates are available as special Voestalpine grades at 900, 960 and 1100 MPa.

  • alform plate 700 M, thermomechanical rolling, high-strength fine-grained steels
  • aldur 700, 900 and 960 Q, hardened and tempered, high strength fine grain steels
  • alform plate 900 M x-treme, thermomechanical rolling, ultra-high-strength fine-grained steel
  • alform plate 960 M x-treme, thermomechanical rolling, ultra-high-strength fine-grained steel

Good to know

Fields of application

Our aldur® high-strength water-hardened steels are used wherever weight savings and low temperature safety are required. Examples include welded structures exposed to high stress levels in crane and vehicle structures, mining equipment, and pressure piping. We also supply hot-formed belts for lifting rigs and lifting boats in marine environments.

Benefits

  • Weight savings are achieved through the high strength of conventional structural steels, resulting in higher payloads in crane and vehicle designs and less expensive designs.
  • Excellent weldability results from low C equivalents with high resistance to cold cracking in the heat affected zone, lower preheat temperatures. A high level of component safety is achieved due to the strength of the welded connection.
