Hollow profile for general use
SSAB Domex® Tube 355J2H is a hollow section with an advanced cold forming design.
It meets or exceeds the requirements of EN 10219 and is available in round, rectangular, square and special shapes. It is typically used in advanced engineering and construction where lower costs and safety are important. It has very pure chemistry and uniform quality. Impact ductility tested at -40°C and suitable for hot-dip galvanizing. Also, welding in corner areas is always allowed.
SSAB Domex® Tube 355J2H is cold-formed and high-frequency welded from pure, high-quality environmentally friendly steel on modern and efficient pipe lines.

Workshop and design
Design
All SSAB Domex pipes are CE marked and therefore suitable for use in load-bearing structures designed in accordance with EN 1993-1 (Eurocode 3) and manufactured in accordance with EN 1090-2. SSAB Domex pipes are suitable for most hollow sections, but are specially designed for use in steel structures. They can be designed without any restrictions according to Eurocode 3 design rules.
SSAB Domex Tube Double Grade consists of two steel grades, S355J2H and S420MH, and comes with two inspection certificates, one for each grade. Therefore, it remains for the designer to decide which grade of steel to use. In many applications, including roof trusses, it is most cost-effective to use a so-called hybrid design, where the elements subjected to the greatest loads will be designed using steel grade S420MH and supporting elements S355J2H. This results in manufacturing cost savings as hybrid joints can be designed with fillet welds of softer material, thus reducing the required throat thickness. SSAB Domex Tube Double Grade has undergone axial compression testing to experimentally determine the correct bending curve in accordance with EN 1993-1-1. Generally, all EN 10219 standards have a bending curve c, but a bending curve b is allowed for Double Grade. This results in clear savings in columns and other compressed elements.
Welding
SSAB Domex pipe is easy to weld due to the low impurity and carbon equivalent content of the steel. The carbon equivalent of SSAB Domex Tube 550 MH is only 0.42, so no preheating is required during welding. All conventional welding methods are suitable.
Although the risk of hydrogen cracking is very low with pure steel and a lean composition, SSAB recommends the use of low hydrogen welding electrodes. Suitable fillers for different grades of steel can be found in the following table.

SSAB recommends the use of suitable fillers. Undermatching can be used in some cases, particularly in hybrid connections where the electrode is selected to match the strength of the milder steel. Also, if the weld is in a low stress zone, it may be beneficial to use undermatched fillers. To maintain the strength of the steel above the weld, the cooling time t8/5 must remain below 20 seconds.
Fillet welding of cold-formed hollow sections is accepted in EN 1993-1-8, provided that the levels of carbon, sulfur and phosphorus are limited to C ≤ 0.18%, P ≤ 0.020% and S ≤ 0.012%. All SSAB Domex pipes meet this condition, so fillet welding is permitted.
Other practicals
All SSAB Domex pipes can be machined or sawn using conventional methods. Tool wear is slightly higher compared to mild steels due to the higher hardness of the material, while on the other hand, saw blade wear can be even lower because the low carbon equivalent prevents the longitudinal weld from hardening during the welding process. The tubes are also suitable for thermal cutting, including plasma and laser cutting.
Cutting large sections out of the pipe can cause distortion, as the pipes are cold formed and therefore contain residual stresses. This can be avoided or controlled with proper cutting design. If residual stresses are causing significant problems, the tubes can be annealed to relieve the stress. The appropriate soaking temperature is 530 – 580 °C and the soaking time is 30 minutes. Flame leveling can be used if the heating is sharp, local and short-term. The peak surface temperature must remain below 900 °C and the short-term heating of the full thickness below 650 °C.
Hot-dip galvanizing of SSAB Domex pipes and structures made from them is possible up to steel grade S460MH. The silicon level of S355J2H, Double Grade and S460MH is guaranteed to be between 0.15 and 0.25%, which provides a smooth zinc surface of approximately 100 microns, depending on the galvanizing parameters. S235JRH is guaranteed to have a silicon content below 0.03%, providing a high-quality zinc surface approximately 75 µm thick. Other versions of low silicon steels (Si below 0.03%) are available on request.
SSAB does not recommend galvanizing SSAB Domex 500 MH and 550 MH pipes. Galvanizing high-strength steels can lead to cracking with liquid metal. If you wish to galvanize these hollow profiles, please consult SSAB technical support first.

It is available in round, rectangular, square and special shapes. Custom shapes and other tailoring options are available upon request. It is commonly used in advanced engineering and construction where weight reduction, lower costs and safety are important. SSAB Domex® Tube Double Grade
Hollow profiles specially designed for steel structures
SSAB Domex® Tube Double Grade is a structural hollow profile.
It meets or exceeds the requirements of EN 10219 and includes two separate modern steel grades: S355J2H and S420MH. The choice of brand depends on the application and requirements of the customer or designer.
If your main goal is excellent usability or simplicity of design, the S355 class is the best choice. If you are looking for a significant weight reduction and longer span, consider the S420MH class.
Welding and other workshop instructions and rules, such as welding procedure testing (ISO 15614-1), material classification (ISO 15608), welding qualification (EN 287-1; ISO 9606-1) and EN 1090 certification procedure, must be in accordance with the relevant mark steel S355 or selected S420.
When using SSAB steels, welding in corner areas is always allowed.
